A paper has just been published as a preprint showing that ITIH3 and ITIH4 (aka heavy chain 3 and heavy chain 4) are 2 of 27 biomarkers that distinguish mild and severe forms of COVID-19:

Clinical classifiers of COVID-19 infection from novel ultra-high-throughput proteomics. (2020) Preprint at medRxiv.

Other biomarkers are components of the complement system, which is interesting given that we recently described a new role for the related ITIH1 as a regulator of the alternative pathway of complement:

Inter-α-inhibitor heavy chain-1 has an integrin-like 3D structure mediating immune regulatory activities and matrix stabilization during ovulation. (2020) J. Biol. Chem. 295, 5278–5291.
It would be very interesting to know if these markers are also elevated in the COVID-19 infected children who are showing the Kawasaki-like syndrome?
